I’m a celebrity get me to Wimbledon

Gwen Stefani

Tennis players aside, who is the most famous person you have seen at Wimbledon? Apparently Angelina Jolie was a guest here a few years ago but I wasn’t working then so she must have been here for the tennis. Everyone will remember Gwen Stefani at last year’s men’s final, but do you remember how bored she looked?

The best celebrity I ever saw at Wimbledon was Jack Nicholson at the 2001 men’s final. Before the match started the crowd was getting a bit boisterous and chanting “Jack, Jack, give us a wave” but Jack did nothing. So the crowd kept chanting, “Jack, Jack, give us a wave” – he was loving the attention – then he leant back in his chair, smirked that Nicholson smirk and arched one eyebrow which you could just see from behind his sunglasses. The crowd went nuts. Now that’s celebrity.

Do you have a celebrity at Wimbledon story to top that?

Aside from Royalty (not sure they count as a celeb!), the most famous person I have seen at Wimbledon was Sir David Frost – can’t remember which match, though! Also saw Angus Deayton on the same occasion – and he wasn’t in the Royal Box!

I once sat next to Jonathan Ross and watched Andy Murray vs David Nalbandian – and in the Royal box on the other side of the court was Sean Connery!

I once saw Cliff Richard sitting in the royal box. It was pouring with rain and he tried to cheer everyone up by singing songs! it was great fun! I also saw Andre Agassi up close but he was being escorted so I was unable to talk to him!

I know that during Ashes years playeed in England the Autralian cricketers come down for the matches. If I remember correctly Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath came down to Wimbledon for the men’s semi final in 2005 between Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt. I also know a lot Indian cricketers come down to watch the matches, last year Wimledon coincided with India’s tour of England, so I do know one of the greatest Legends of cricket Sachin Tendulkar who cheered for Roger last year was there and so were some of the others!

I’m not 100% sure; but I think I saw Australian cricketers Steve Waugh and Shane Warne cheering for Patrick Rafter in 2001 Wimbledon final versus the eventual fourth-time lucky Wild card champion croatian Goran Ivanisevic.

I saw the British tennis player Emma Langan last year. She was supposed to be competing as a qualifier but she couldn’t due to injury. She’s quite good and the next grand slam champion I bet. Apparently she’s dating Marat Safin. Look her up. 🙂

Yeah I saw Jack Nicholson when I was at the Men’s Final back in 2001 also. I’ve been to every Men’s Final since then & have also seen Paul McCartney, Nigel Havers, David Frost, Terry Wogan, Alistair McGowan, Kenneth Clark.

I’m sure there is plenty more but I can’t remember!!

My first visit to Wimbledon was about 1976 when my mate and I saw a lady ouside the commentary boxes under the Centre Court, surrounded by Americans. I recognised her but could not place the name until someone told me it was Ginger Rogers. Apparently she was as good a tennis player in her say as she was a dancer. Since then I have seen Cliff (and have a nice photo of him alongside Sue Barker) Barbra Streisand and Norman Lamont( why?)

My unknown celebrity was the gentleman and his son who gave me their Centre Court tickets on my very first trip to Wimbledon. They were leaving for the day, and my friend and I were taking a rest just outside Centre Court. He wouldn’t even take anything for them! Now that’s a celebrity!

On the way down to Wimbledon on the first day of play in 2006, I spotted Cliff Richard being driven down to the Championships. My brother remarked that it was a bad sign to see him at that stage as there was likely to be rain and he would be singing to entertain the crowd! Low and behold it poured down later and we only got to see 10 minutes of play!! That was my only experience of Wimbledon!!

My sisters and I were sitting right behind Jack Nicholson that year – we managed to get his autograph, after that he wouldn’t sign for anyone else.

Have been going to Wimbledon almost every day for the last 23 years so have seen many celebrities – as well as the names above: Arnold Schwarzenegger; John Terry; Robin Given, Brooke Shields, Bruce Forsyth, Terry Wogan, Michael Buerk; Michael Johnson
